Whitechapel Gallery is an institution that bridges two centuries. In 1901, the vision and philanthropy of Canon Samuel and Henrietta Barnett created a public art gallery in the East End of London. More than 100 years on, following our major expansion in 2009, that history of forward thinking has propelled us into the 21st century as an organisation at the vanguard of international art and culture. You can find out more about the extraordinary developments of the decade following our expansion by downloading our 2009 – 2019 Impact Report.

Today we are proud to be supported by Arts Council England, but continue to rely on the generosity of individuals, corporate supporters and charitable trusts and foundations for over one-third of our annual income.

Join us in looking Towards Tomorrow and support our leadership in the international artistic and cultural landscape.
